Why Order Heat-Treated Wood Pallets

Heat-treating solid wood pallets is a chemical-free way to meet requirements for international shipments.

Over the years, as global shipments among countries have increased, so too has the use of pallets. Foreign species of lumber, which sometimes harbor bugs, have moved across the seas and borders. By heat-treating pallet lumber, manufacturers can help prevent the spread of invasive insect species.

Standards for heat-treating solid wood pallets to be shipped internationally have been put forward by the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC). This organization has established the ISPM-15, or International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15. Pallets that meet ISPM-15 certification requirements are approved for international shipping.

Heat treatment is an eco-friendly approach to preventing invasive insect species spread as no chemicals are used in the heat-treating process.

How Heat-Treating Works

Each of our facilities has large chambers with industrial propane or natural gas burners and fans. These chambers are used for the heat-treating process and can hold about 400 pallets each.

The thickest part of the pallet, which is generally the 2x4, is heated until the temperature at the center reaches 140 degrees Fahrenheit. We then hold the temperature at or above that mark for 35 minutes. This ensures that the pallets are bug-free.

We then stamp the pallets on each side with our ISPM-15 mark, identifying certification for international export.

Application Options

We can heat treat new or repaired/remanufactured pallets, whether they are of standard or custom size.

Our standard-sized new pallets are 48x40 inches. Our custom-sized pallets are made using the Pallet Design System (PDS), a computer-aided tool that brings precision to pallet construction.

Repaired pallets have been used and then refurbished for future use. They are a durable option that costs less than newly constructed pallets. Remanufactured pallets are also a solid option, costing less than new pallets.

For Storage and Display Solutions

In addition to their use for shipping products, heat-treated pallets provide benefits as storage and display solutions.

Within warehouses, heat-treated pallets can help keep pests away from stored goods. Big-box retailers often use heat-treated pallets, which are more durable than pallets treated with chemicals, to display merchandise.
